The Flavors of PREP!
The Flavors of PREP!
PREP offers what is essentially working spaces that are set up all around the food industry. They have full kitchens, area for storage, small offices, and more. PREP allows the foodies with a dream, the space to make it come true, and expand their process with the kitchen setup which is essential to making it happen. At PREP, you will find everything a restaurant needs. These small business owners sell online, and local and whole sale to restaurants and grocery stores (Whole Foods & Fresh Market) in Atlanta. They cater events and sometimes open their doors for regular restaurant style service. Here, there are bakers, specialists in everything from sauces, BBQ, organic, vegan, local only, sweet, savory, to anything hot or cold.
I had the pleasure to attend an event hosted by PREP and Gordon Food Service to showcase what PREP and the people that work at PREP have to offer. Flavor was a fun, mostly outdoor event. It kicked off with a tasting with Chef Scott Lamphere and a lineup of seafood and other specialty items from GFS & Halperns’ in Yum Catering’s Kitchen. Flavor is an event where these various small businesses come out of their PREP kitchens and set up outside, to showoff what they do best. Flavors allows the curious to sample what these up-and-coming Chefs and Bakers have to offer, while opening up the potential for appointments for catering, event hosting and partnerships in the future.
Below are some of the amazingly talented and yummy businesses which I had the opportunity to talk with. Check out what’s happening at PREP 1 & 2, with soon to be PREP 3!
Small batch, specialty coffee that is responsibly sourced through programs including Fair Trade, USDA Organic, Women Coffee Producers and Farm Gate Direct Trade. Cloudland Coffee Company is on a mission to provide high quality coffee to the local Atlanta market. They do cold brew and hot. The cold brew decaffeinated is made with a chemical-free process called Swiss Water Process or Mountain Water Process. They sell (bags of whole bean or freshly ground) online, at local farmers markets, and at pop-up/special events in Atlanta area. These coffee beans come from Sumatra, Ethiopia, Columbia, and more. Check out their website or social media for more details and upcoming locations to try samples! Free shipping on orders more than $45!
Delicious cookie samplings also include vegan, which from the samples I got to try I would never have guessed that they weren’t a regular cookie (with no dietary restrictions). She also does beautifully decorated cookies for special occasions (think Holiday parties and more!). To see samples of her work, visit Curly Sue’s Cookies online or on social media. She bakes everything from the classic Chocolate Chip to something a little new, like the double lemon pecan drop. Explore all she has to offer by going online to her website, visiting her in person at the local Brookhaven Farmer’s Market or find select cookies at Savi Provisions in Brookhaven.
Owned and operated by two sisters, who say, “Anything you can make, I can make…vegan.” I got to sample their Everything Sauce, this is a sauce that can go and be used on EVERYTHING – pastas, salad dressings, marination for BBQ, etc. So, whether you are in the market for a smokey, heavier sauce or a cool, light sauce for the summer, they have you covered! These two also help those of us that would like to go a little more healthy and are maybe considering the vegan lifestyle with their very own book. This book helps guide the lifestyle change – it isn’t all about food and eating but that does play a very important part. Visit their website to try out some of their products, they also have a section of recipe and food ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert.
Here you will find everything you need to satisfy your sweet tooth! Fun or themed cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and more! Swing by the Prep Campus on Tuesdays from 11-6:30pm for her in-person retail day. Can’t make Tuesday? That’s okay! Kim mainly operates from online for ordering and can arrange appointments as needed from there. So for those of you out there with an upcoming wedding, birthday, anniversary party, Graduation, or Baby Shower, check out her website for selections of cake and frosting flavors and styles. She also does general catering for events, which includes a breakfast menu as well as dessert.
For some of you, Five Daughters might seem familiar. That’s because they are now part of Ponce City Market! This bakery is a small chain that got its start in Nashville (where you will find several locations), but is newly expanding into Atlanta. They do a lot of donuts. But what makes these donuts different from others? These donuts are a cross between a regular donut texture and a croissant, then they add all sorts of yummy frostings, flavors, and delights on top, which means you get an out of this world donut. Also because they work with local, seasonal ingredients the donut menu changes monthly. So if you want to check this all out but not sure if you really want to head over to Ponce City, go to their website, they have a donut cam for every location!
Here you will find some of the best banana pudding you have ever tasted! They also do cheesecakes too! They specialize in catering desserts for special events, by making individual, elegant desserts presented to guests in a beautifully packaged way. If you had one of their desserts at a party and are craving it again, they also sell select flavors online. For catering, their complete menu includes: Caramel Apple Cheesecake, Caramel Pecan Cheesecake, Original Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cheesecake (seasonal), and Sweet Potato Cheesecake.
This cafe has some of the best brisket I have ever had! Open everyday at Prep 2 for service! Open for breakfast and lunch Monday – Friday 8 – 3, and Brunch on Saturday 10:30 – 3. This cafe is the first born child of catering company MRDFoods. Chef Chris Morrison specializes in farm-to-table cuisine, sourcing foods from local farmers, bakers, and businesses in Atlanta and surrounding areas. Small location, but big flavor! Check out their menu online or stop by for a taste!
Family owned and operated, based out of Covington, this is a dream in the making. They offer the whole range of baked goods from sweet to savory, including but not limited too: cookies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, tarts, and savory breads of all varieties. All goods catered and sold online, so check out their website and social media for more! With holiday, seasonal, and specialty items available upon request and availability of ingredients. Also look for the bakery specials of the month for those of you that just want an excuse to try something tasty at Sweet but Savory.
